Expensive, but why not if it lights your fuse. I'd go with a Strike Industries Enhanced Ultimate dust cover - about the same weight and half the price.

For the handguard alone, this is true. However, the Midwest Industries hand guards come with 5 QD sockets. Adding even a single QD to the KMR pushes it close to the same weight as the MI, adding two pushes it over.
The point is, when comparing parts weights you have to consider the entire system. I once removed a DD M4 handguard from an SBR to install a Troy tube-style and found that by the time I added back a Pic rail to attach my VFG the "lighter" Troy actually added more wight to the gun.WWW.TACTICALYELLOWVISOR.NET

Another lite handguards is the 2A Armament BL Rail, but it's only available in 7", 12" and 15". If you replace their titanium barrel nut with their aluminum one it reduces the weight by 0.65 oz., that would put their 7" version at 5 oz. with all hardware included. 7.45 oz. for the 12" version. But this is without a QD socket as Rob_S has stated.

Could always get the Ti barrel nut and clamps for the KMR, made by V7.

Ran across this the other day:

I think 4.5 lbs is as light as you're gonna get! I might build something like this one day. My favorite builds are always the lightweights ...

Considering an ultra-light weight build
I'm in the process of building a 14.5 Noveske Thunder Ranch clone... It should weight right at 6lbs finished.
I looked hard at the V7 stuff when I was selecting parts and they have quality no doubt. But the huge price increase just to shave an oz or two isn't worth it IMHOLast edited by DutyUse; 5 June 2015 at 15:58.
