Aero M5 308 build complete with pictures
I've been wanting an AR10 for some time and decided to try the Aero M5 16" upper. Im looking for a good hog gun that i can be consistent in the 400-600 yard range, maybe stretch to 800 on occasion. I have an 18" RRA 556 and don't like the longer gun for hunting and Ive read the FPS loss is pretty low on the 308 going from an 18 to 16.
So here is the build list:
Aero M5 16" upper 1/10 twist SS barrel
VG6 Precision Gamma 7.62 muzzle brake
BCM Gunfighter mod 4 CH (had to file it a little bit for clearance on the lower)
Cryptic Coatings 308 BCG in mystic black
Burris PEPR 30mm scope ring with sightron 6-24x50 scope
Aero M5 enhanced lower
Aero LPK
Geissele SSA-E trigger (big improvement over SSA which is on my RRA gun) break is much lighter
Magpul 1.1 MIAD grip (definitely easier to use than the 1.0)
Magpul STR stock in FDE
Anderson 308 buffer tube kit
I know 308 builds can be finicky, especially during break in so i was anxious to get some rounds downrange. I went back to my farm last weekend to see my son, saw him saturday and thought, ill just shoot tomorrow. Of course, it rained all day sunday. Finally at 3pm i said heck with it and took it out in the pouring rain and put a mag downrange. I had lubed up the BCG with CLP pretty good, stuff was dripping out everywhere (per Aero's instructions). They said the BCGs are a lot of mass to cycle and they're right about that.
Anyway, it ran flawless, no FTEs or FTFs and even locked back on the last round so Im pretty pleased. I can't comment on grouping yet. I was just trying to get the scope half dialed in but i had a few rounds that were pretty tight so I think it's promising. Im very happy with the VG6 muzzle brake. It is incredible on reducing recoil and muzzle rise. This thing does not shoot like a 308 at all, more like a slightly amped up 556.
Here are some pics. I think my two complaints are the lower not fitting with the BCM CH, they need to shave .001' off it to fit and the color isn't true FDE. You can see a slight difference in it.

thanks guys, i did a lot of research before i pieced it together. Really wanted to do it in burnt bronze but the FDE deal from aero was pretty good and it looks sharp. Im just happy it paid off and the d@mn thing runs right. Now i just have to see if it puts up good groups.

That looks great and I dig the parts list! How do you like the scope so far?

Very, Very nice. It's probably a couple more years before I can start a .308 project. I have already worked up a spreadsheet for one too. Darned if I know what color I'll use though.

Looks very nice. Think my next AR10 is going to be this set. I really like that lower. And I have had issues with that charging handle being tight in a Vltor upper also. Not sure I'd blame the upper specifically.

Sinner, thanks for the info on the charging handle. I won't blame aero lol.
Jymbeux, scope is great. Crystal clear, very positive clicks and resets well. I like the mildot size too.

It was the 5.56 handle but same scenario. Funny part is I bought a handful of the BCM's that were out of spec and marked for training use only that had no interference on the VLTOR. Makes me think one is at the large end of the spec and one on the small side.
The Raptor is my current .308 pattern favorite. 5.56 too for that matter.

I've got a raptor on one of my 556 but I prefer the mod4. Two minutes with a file and it was good to go
