Parallax-free doesn't exist with current technology. http://www.breachbangclear.com/parallax-free-isnt/
However, many modern red dots have very little parallax. My Aimpoints have significantly less parallax than my RMR, for example.

I tried really hard to convince myself to go with a red dot and a magnifier when I was purchasing an optic for my 16" Noveske. It didn't make sense to me to have two items to worry about. I decided to go with a 4x ACOG (found a good deal) and ended up around the same cost as a red dot and magnifier. No hassles wit it and it can do just about anything from 0-600 yards. Just something to consider

FNG: good call. I think I'm going to do an ACOG for my Middy.

I recommend trying before buying on an ACOG. The 4x has an eye relief of 1.5" and the 3x has a longer relief. Some people can't deal with the short eye relief. I personally like it but have buddies who can't stand it.

I've used a 31, so the eye relief is fine with me.

I have an EOTech (first gen) 3X. I kept it when I turned in the HWS units. It works well with the AimPoint PRO units I put on as replacements. It is on a QD and FTS so I positioned all the PRO's so it would fit behind them. I am to old to "dual-wield" AR platforms, so I only shoot one at a time; one 3X is sufficient for me.
Oh, and I like it. Have not tried others though.

Old thread, but it is worth pointing out the new Aimpoint 3x and 6x mil units are out.
