    Stepping outside 5.56

I was looking at going 6.5 Grendel for this SNEK build. Something different than 5.56. How prices really jump when you step outside the mainstream eh?

You're telling me.... I have been quietly eyeballing some stuff and yeah... it makes me wonder what I really want to do and which calibers I want to commit to.

Yeah.... Either this is going to go on the back burner or I'll be doing it in .22. I've been wanting a .22 AR for some time now, too. We shall see.

Depends what you want to do. These days I prefer calibers that share the same bolt and mags.

Me too but .300 in a 16" barrel seems pointless. There are other calibers too but they're all pricey to play with.

In CO, a 300blk gets you in the woods at least. And with an AR pistol it's legal to hunt with the shorter barrel (but not SBR). I take it you're against the pistol approach.

The problem is, this is a serial-less lower so no pistola, already though about a .300 pistol. Ha

I've never heard a serial-less lower can't be a pistol...!! Do you have a document on that?

That would suck for all the 1911 80% folks.

Sorry, I live in Michigan. Pistols have to have a serial number.

Good to know. Okay, back to a pinned 14.5" 300 blackout. Haha

Actually, for a more common round that justifies a longer barrel, 6.8 may be the thing.

    That's what I'm looking at mostly. 6.5 or 6.8.

But...why? The perception is that "because I can, I must", regarding 300BLK and barrel length. In a 16" weapon, the solid BC of the 300BLK projectiles turns it into a .30-30 around 100-150 yards or so. Before that, it's like some of the "LITE" .30-30 loads. It's very viable and sensible.

When you form 4 it, you can give it any serial you want. Just have it engraved first because they'll want photos with it not being a previously sold product.

The point being from me, I don't want to serialize it. :)

I COULD SBR my SMOS and throw a .300 barrel on it.

The .300 performs OK with supersonic ammo. Basically a AR 30/30. But honestly unless you are looking for a SBR shooting subs the 6.8SPC walks all over the BO at supersonic performance. Not a fan of the Grendel. Chamber pressures are far too high for the case dimensions. By time you remove enough material from the bolt to fit the cartridge the structural integrity is gone. Lots of band aids as a fix but ultimately the cartridge is handicapped by the required lighter loads to keep the bolt in tact. The case diameter would be much better served with a .308 sized bolt face.
