Where do you buy your steel targets?

The sportsman club that I am a member at has recently added a 100yd Action Carbine Course, and Turned our Action Pistol Pit into a Action Pistol Course as well. We are looking to add some steel targets to both courses. The action pistol range is actually big enough to setup Steel Challenge events ( 5 stages ). Doing some google searches I have found some sites that we might purchase from but thought I would check with you guys and see if anyone has any input on past experiences with other target manufacturers/dealers.

I have looked at Nevco Targets and Red Stitch Tactical to pick up the Steel Challenge target sets.

Now just gotta figure out how we are going to raise funds for these without jacking up the membership dues lol.

I have purchased some from Law Enforcement Targets, Inc. Good stuff and they have "official" Steel Challenge targets. They will have a sale every now and then - basically saves shipping. You can buy targets, parts, or kits that include stands. Link below is to their steel page.

You can see some in the background waiting for the pistol session to be set up.

MGM Targets are legit. I've shot some stuff you shouldn't shoot at mine (7n6, Greek HXP) and it has held up much better than I would have expected (and only one nick on the edge, probably from a 7n6 round). The one issue I've had was due to an errant .308 round that apparently went through the aluminum stand. Apparently aluminum is not bullet proof. Important life note.

    @Jerry,

Okay, I'll say it...is that guy on the AR afraid of his gun? He looks like he's as far away as he can possibly get.

No, actually a LEO, but his first time off bags with a 6.8 SBR. Not his rifle, and first couple of rounds - nervous. He did the "Jungle Walk" with it later - no issues.

You all have posted some really good links and I will compile my lists and submit them to the Range Director for our club. Looks like it is going to be roughly 6k to get a complete ( all 8 stages ) set of steel challenge targets to include base plates, end caps and shooter boxes.

Now just need to come up with a way to raise the money without raising dues.

Prices look decent here. Will have to do the math and see what it equals out to be.

I know I can get all 8 sets from Red Stitch Tactical for under 5 grand. MGM Targets for the whole set is a little over 6 grand. Think I will submit 3 options to the board and let them decide which one we pick up.

One thing you might be able to do with MGM is talk to them about a bulk purchase. They have sales all the time (probably based off what's being manufactured at the time), so if you're going in telling them you'll be making a big purchase, they might be able to work with them. Between the auto-reset target I have from them, the range I competed at in CA all the time, and the local range here in FL, I've been very impressed with their products, including their durability and therefore value.

I personally like the MGM sets. But its the club's money so gotta go with what they want. Next step will be trying to furnish the action carbine range.

I have bought stuff from http://thetargetman.com/ and http://www.shooterselement.com/ online. If you are located near 'industry metal supply' they now carry ar500 plates and is ususally cheaper since you don't have to pay for shipping.

A couple of thoughts on steel, independent of maker, and based on 10 years of involvement with an IDPA club watching steel get abused (we also do carbine and shotgun matches)...

    1) Welds on the strike plate are bad. Bolts are ok. Designs that cradle the plate are best.
    2) Buy from an established company unless you have a local source for fab of replacement parts.
    3) If you're part of a club, ask around the membership for someone who might be qualified to help with #2
    4) bases need stake holes, especially when being used for match shooting
    5) knock-down targets (falling plates, plate racks, pepper poppers) are fun but all but eliminate 50% of the benefit of steel, which is not having to paste/reset.
    6) knock-down targets also mean more parts. More parts means more crap to lose/break

Rob couldn't agree more. I have found a source locally for replacing steel as it needs to be replaced ( 4'x8'x3/8" AR500 steel sheets for $550 ) and I do have access to an industrial flowjet ( and a plasma cutter but I know heat effects the steel ). I have not found a place that had cradled targets. Until now our club only had an action pistol pit that had a plate rack, some bowling pins and a couple cardboard holders. Mostly everyone just shot bulls eye until now. All the bases and shooter boxes from the MGM set have stake holes and come with the stakes.

I think the goal is to get the new action pistol area setup so the club can hold some events for members and compete against other nearby clubs. Generate a little revenue to help fund setting up the new action carbine range. I have a feeling the steel for the rifle course is going to be about the same as the pistol course but we are going to need to add bases for paper/cardboard and maybe reactive targets.

New pistol area is 50yds deep x 100yds wide, new action carbine area is 150yds deep, 150yds wide. There is talk about trying to setup for 3-gun by next year. I am just happy that I might get to run 2-gun this year.
