Hopefully this weekend I'll get out and zero the irons. I'll also find out if I still know how to shoot. I'm guessing yes, but it has been a little while. Happy daydreams about your MRP - I hope time goes by fast for you.

Great looking weapon. I have a thing for accurate rifles, but wonder about the extra weight of the barrel and upper. How is the balance, and how does it handle?

Arrived yesterday. Man, that was lightning fast. Thanks, John. Hope the weather cooperate this weekend.

It's on the heavy side - nothing to complain about, but its not a lightweight either. The balance is right around where the delta ring would be if it had one. I'm thinking I'll try to get an X300 in front of the front sight - the switch is the hard part. Still thinking about that. Honestly I would prefer the balance an inch farther back, but the weight is comforting. I don't mind it at all. I think when I get a Comp M4 w/ LaRue mount it will help - the cantilever built in will put the optic farther out, but keep the weight to the rear a little. Maybe that's just wishful thinking...I'll let you know when I can afford it.

I am waiting for a 14.5" LMT from John as well. It's been about a month for the FH to be installed and I check my email everyday like a giddy little school girl.

    Range Report

I got out to the range today to check the zero on the irons, and just to enjoy shooting a little. I chronographed a few loads while I was out there too. I shot a couple hundred rounds, a mixture of UMC/Remington .223, TAP 75 gr .223, and TAP 75 gr 5.56 NATO. Here's some velocities:

    Rem 55 UMC
    2764
    2694
    2743
    2706
    2709
    2697
    2743
    2763
    2748

    TAP 75 .223
    2507
    2535
    2519
    2531
    2498
    2530
    2527
    2518
    2512
    2517

    TAP 75 5.56
    2626
    2620
    2608
    2613
    2632
    2618
    2621
    2617
    2614
    2633

I was pretty please with the velocities considering this is a 13.7" barrel - the velocities with the TAP 75 .223 were comparable what you'd expect to get from a 16" barrel, while the TAP 75 5.56 velocities were comparable to those from a 14.5" barrel.
The 5.56 brass came out looking pretty, but some of the TAP 75 .223 brass had pierced primers. I'll be giving Hornady a call this week about that. The UMC ran fine, naturally - just smells funny and doesn't shoot as well.
I was shooting groups through the chrono at about 50 yards and my best was probably 3/4" or so - that was with the TAP 75 .223 - Smart guy that I am I only brought one target, so after using a 6 o'clock hold, 12 o'clock hold, and center mass hold I started into the 3 o'clock with the 5.56....kinda hard to be consistent like that. Maybe next time I'll take more targets.
Irregardless the gun shoots nice. I used some PMAGs I got recently and didn't have any malfunctions or anything.

I got in touch with Hornady yesterday, and I'll be sending them back all my .223 Rem 75 TAP. They said they'll take care of me. We'll see what that means to them...

    Update

I talked to Hornady this morning and they said they tested the ammo and its fine. They're going to replace what I shot, what they shot, put a hat in the box and send it back to me.

Then I called Noveske and told them about it - Hornady said my firing pin was probably a little long, and not as rounded as it should be. Noveske said they'd send me a new firing pin, and see if that fixes it. They're also going to take a look at the cases from the test firing for my gun. Hopefully the firing pin will be the end of it - if not I'll send my upper in for a check-up.

Got some doodads. The primers problem was firing pin related - I got a new one in the mail from Noveske. Now if I can just get off work enough to shoot it...

Good to know that they were all that willing to work with you. How are you liking it so far aside from the above issue?

A piston version of an MRP keeps getting better and better looking to me. Weight was my main issue...

    Stickman - I like it a lot!

TigerStripe - My gun is not that heavy - the VIS is nice. The KX3 probably effects the balance more than anything else - its 7.2 ounces and its way out there at the end. I switched out for the EMOD and now the balance point is maybe an inch behind the front takedown pin. It points nice. I don't know how much it weighs - I'd guess maybe 9 pounds with a full mag - but its just a guess.
