Tactical Tailor Mag pouches (and PMAG fitting)

Tactical Tailor is a result of Logan Coffey's service in the US Army. After assignment to the Schofield Barracks in a Scout Platoon, Coffee moved into a Sniper slot, and found certain things lacking. Logan has commented in the 2008 catalog that the items issued in the early 90s were basically Vietnam era equipment. I served in this same time frame, and completely agree. In speaking with Logan during a vest and armor shoot a few years back, he commented that the need for better equipment was so obvious that he began creating it himself while working out of his barrack room.

Things have certainly changed for Logan and Tactical Tailor since their humble beginnings in the barracks, and later outside of Ft Lewis WA. With a large and still expanding factory, new and expanding retail store, as well as an extensive online website, they are serving the needs of the current war fighter across the map. Local Law Enforcement and troops have found that along with almost any nylon item they need, Tactical Tailor still works custom alterations on gear, and is able to provide quick turn around times as well as high quality.

With an increased demand of Tactical Tailor to become a one stop shop for deploying troops, they have teamed up with Magpul to offer an expanding lineup of needed items. Magpul PMAGs are a highly requested item as LE & MIL pass through the retail store making purchases, and it makes sense that mag pouches should have quality magazines as an option to fill them.

I deal with the Magpul Crew on a pretty regular basis, and have my LE hard armor loaded with Magpul PMAGs in Tactical Tailor pouches. I've had a pretty decent amount of email and questions regarding what mag pouches will work with PMAGs, so I figured that it would be worth a writeup on the Tactical Tailor magazine pouch lineup regarding PMAG compatibility.

5.56 SINGLE MAG POUCH


Starting with the smallest single mag pouch, I found no issues with fit in width or overall length of the pouch. The retaining bungee cord holds in place without any undue effort, and releases without problem.

5.56 TRIPLE MAG PANEL


The triple mag panel is an extension of the above single mag panel. As expected, the overall fit in width and length is similar, and the bungee attachment was exactly the same. With all PMAGs in place, the center pouch was slightly tighter than the outer two, but it wasn't anything that I would consider to be an issue. I had previously mentioned this in passing to G.W Ayers, the sales manager, and he commented that soaking nylon pouches in water and allowing them to dry will form them to the desired shape. This is a pretty common trick and is done with other items, and frequently done with holsters as well. GW is a US Army veteran, and between his time spent in Iraq, and his knowledge of nylon gear, he is more than a little capable when it comes to assessing equipment. I consider him to be one of the good guys out there in the weapon community.

2 Mag 5.56 Pouch


The 2 Magazine 5.56 Pouch is immediately noticeable as being a little different. The two shotgun shell loops on the front identify this as part of a lineup for multiple weapon systems amongst a squad. While your needs might not include employing a shotgun, the loops have never caught up on anything or created any problems that I'm aware of.

While looking at this mag pouch from the front, it appears that the flap barely covers the magazines. However, the side view shows that there is a several inch overlap in its attachment. The bungee cinch cord around the sides make sure there is no rattle when two mags are in the pouch.

3 MAG 5.56 POUCH



The triple magazine pouch also features a bungee cinch cord around the sides to reduce rattle. This magazine pouch is probably the most popular for those people who choose to stay with a pouch instead of going with "shingle" or "panel" style attachments. The triple mag pouches are large enough to hold other items if needed, which make for a nice balance if you are short on pouches, or need to alter your load on short notice.

AK/M16 Mag Pouch


The AK/M16 magazine pouch is designed for three 5.56 magazines, or two AK series magazines. This pouch completely encloses the magazines, which may be a welcome advantage depending on what your particular operating environment is. Dirt, mud, sand, snow or working in and around damaged buildings are all ways to start filling up your mag pouch. Proper maintenance on your equipment obviously alleviates the above as a problem, but it doesn't change that what is "routine" cleaning for some, may be a abstract concept for others. If you are looking for closed pouch to hold your magazines, this does a good job.

Tactical Tailor did do a special run of shorter and "roomier" 3-Mag Shingles designed specifically for the 20-round PMAGs. Right now the only color available is OD and Multicam is going to follow.
