Weird Winchester White Box .45ACP Cartridge Failure

Here's an odd one. Anyone seen this before?

I was shooting an XDS .45 for the first time. I don't normally keep .45ACP around so I bought some cheap WWB at the range.

Got through half a box with no issues, then this round made a little "pop" then a "hiss". A little plume of white smoke wafted from the ejection port.

I figured it was a squib, expecting to find the bullet halfway down the barrel. Waited a minute, checked the chamber and found this.

It was covered in black soot and had clearly shot flame into the side of the chamber.

Very strange indeed. First time I've seen one like this.

    MD,
I've shot a crap load of that stuff (WWB). just because it was cheap. Never had any problem, much less a major failure like you pictured. Just took a pause and went back in the safe. Still have 9 boxes of .45 WWB. Nada problem. I had a friend, years ago, shoot a round of 44mag. Completely exploded. Something you'd expect from a bad hand load. He sent the rest back, and they sent him another box of ammo. My thought was BS. Good thing he didn't have a gun explode in his face, just for a free box of ammo.

However, hand loads, or whatever, I guess if we play the game long enough, we'll see something like this happen.

I like the XDS .45, but with only 5+1 firepower is pretty limited. It's fun to shoot though, and it's been reliable so far. Great range toy, for sure.

Thats pretty crazy. Do you think it came out of the box like that?

From what it sounds like, only the primer detonated. Makes me think that there was very little, if any powder in the cartridge.

Federal/Speer gets most of my money when it comes to factory ammo. Winchester gets the second most and a Remington gets very little. Remington has just burned me, and I get too many duds with their 22LR ammo. And their .223 ammo shoots 2 MOA in my rifle while everything else shoots Sub MOA or just a tad over. Too bad too since they're made in my home state.

As for that WWB, that's really weird. I would definitely contact Winchester about it.

It looks like it was punctured from the outside in. If it were to have a weak point in the brass wouldn't we see SOME type of bulging? I realize it was chambered so maybe not...

But, as the brass looks, it doesn't appear as though the trauma came from within. If that makes sense.
The brass should be flared out, not in.

Makes perfect sense, as if it were punctured while in the box.

Yep, most likely something of the like happened and was just missed loading up the mag.

Or there is the other scenario of MoxyDave needing to be tested for PED's and have punctured it with his super human strength.

Haha yes I probably squeezed it too tightly while loading it in the magazine with my super strong fingers LOL.

I'm not going to make a stink about it with Winchester. It was one in a million. I would never use that shit ammo for anything but plinking anyhow ... even TUL makes better training ammo ...

My TLE Pro loves Tula. My friends get pissed when they see it in my range bag.

Haha my Glock & Shield eat TUL up. Other guns not so much. Seem to have some hard primers.
