Good article!

I have had some minimal interaction with Chris Tran on facebook and I can already tell that I like the guy. He seems to me to be cool as hell.

I don't know him personally or anything but his demeanor and professionalism towards someone who he had no idea who I was was very much appreciated. Just in those few short interactions he's earned respect from me.

I'd do a SMOS raptor and BCG. But ask them if they can do the freedom bone style! That would be exceptional. Griffon already has the branded freedom bone and I see a few other sites are carrying them now too.

Cool. Are the Azimuth BCGs melonited or black nitrided? Don't know if I want to buy a BCG that doesn't have a super special coating [BD] But really... I do like having an easy-to-clean BCG. That's my main affinity with NiB/Nitrided/Chromed/Etc BCGs. You know... a Fathom BCG lasered with the SMOS logo...... [pop]

Melonite is just a trade name for salt bath nitrocarburizing, i.e. Black Nitride (also a trade name). Glock's Tenifer, HK's Hostile Environment finish, et. al. are all basically the same thing.

Regardless of what it's called, it makes a great surface treatment for firearm parts.

I thought I would be posting my GFY rifle by now, but ran into a snafu with my barrel. The chamber was too tight, and I got it pinned with a gas block before I realized the barrel had to go back. DOH!

As some have mentioned, I noticed my SMOS upper and lower are super tight, even with BAD EPS Pins.

fledge
5 April 2016, 06:34
When I bought my first SM upper back in July, Chris said, "Expect the fit to be tight and the take down pins to start our tight as well. These things loosen over time and our goal was to create long lasting parts for the AR 15."

I assume the GFY uppers are designed with similar tolerances. FWIW.

My SM15 upper was EXTREMELY tight on my POF lower. I had to use something to punch them out every time. I probably only took the pins out between 20-30 times, so maybe I just didn't punch them out enough times for them to loosen up.

The front piece of top rail is removable. You can leave it off for a FSB, or put it on if you have a switchblock.

That I did not know. I figured it was two different rails: one to accommodate FSP and another for Switchblocks. Personally, I'd rather it be the front piece of the bottom rail that was removable so driving gas block pins would be a much simpler task.

That's a fact. Even with the Noveske barrels nuts being threaded on both ends and the threads on each end being offset, i've had to use shims to correctly time them. Without the shims, the torque value was either below spec, or i got it as tight as i could and it still wasn't timed correctly. I will say that for a barrel nut that requires timing, ALG got it right with their EMR. They include a special barrel nut wrench, shims, and extremely detailed and easy to follow instructions on how to time the barrel nut correctly, which resulted in a perfectly timed barrel nut on the first try...and no cursing was necessary!

That would be awesome if they released a rail like that. Hopefully something compatible with a wide range of uppers. I was really bummed when i found out a Geissele rail wouldn't work with a Mega billet upper without having to modify one or the other.

I will agree its nice not having to time a nut, but I far prefer the looks of the Noveske NSR's and SMOS rails. I've never ran into any issues with timing following Noveskes instructions. I have had to flip one around before. I feel like the extra little effort is worth it....JMO

I once had an NSR barrel nut that just would not time correctly with proper torque (i think Noveske says 40 ft.-lb.). but, i was able to time it at 35#, so thats where it stayed. so far so good.

In other news, i finally finished my GFY build from the parts i bought during the original deal SMOS offered us WEVO folks. It's gone through a lot of changes since i started, but i'm real happy with how it turned out. I'll post pics soon, maybe even resurrect Pyzik's SMOS build thread. [BD]

My SMOS GFY set is finally a complete rifle. Given the awesome deal SMOS gave us on the receivers, my goal was to build this rifle for as little money as possible yet not sacrifice quality in the process. The only thing i purchased specifically for this gun was the barrel. Everything else was on hand, or became available for use in this build as parts came off other rifles for various reasons. After a lot of swapping around of parts trying to get this gun just right, i went with a Ballistic Advantage Modern Series barrel chambered in 5.56 nato with their pinned low profile gas block and melonite gas tube, a Smith Vortex flash hider, Troy BUIS, Magpul MOE furniture in FDE, an Aimpoint ACO in a QRP mount, Rainier Arms Raptor charging handle, ALG QMS trigger, RCA nitrided BCG (i blacked out their logo with some cold blue), Impact Weapons QD receiver end plate, Strike Industries magazine catch and button, and a Noveske takedown/pivot pin set for shits and giggles.

Sexy.

Thanks, Pyzik. Not quite as elegant as yours turned out to be, but i'm happy with it.

I think it turned out great. At least you have a (quality) optic on it. Mine is still naked.
