Just received this today, so I don't have many specs on it. Measures exactly 14" on my tape measure, and weighs 12.85oz with barrel nut and screws on my scale. SMOS Arms (http://www.smosarms.com/) plans to release other lengths along with the 14. For those that don't know SMOS Arms (http://www.smosarms.com/) makes quality OEM products for many brands you'd be familiar with.

I'll update this with more information as I get it.

Curious - are they going to be putting their name in that little box that's part of the Pic rail; like they did for the Sugar Pine version?

@12.85 oz, not bad for a 14"

That is a really good price though for that run of rails I must say. Makes me wonder what MSRP will be.

Ooh, that do look sweet UW. I first thought WTH happened to tear up your Battlecomp? Then I saw that the jagged edge was to artful to not be by design.

Looks like I may be mounting mine after all. After torquing down the DD Lite rail nut and re-pinning the shaved gas block on my 6920 barrel, I find the ID of the rail is too small for the gas block. Grrr, I hate having to learn the same lesson again.

Never again for the Lite rails. I have two others and love them, but the shallow notches on the barrel nut and cheap-ass soft steel wrench are too much of a pain to put up with.

Please excuse the californication of the rifle. I like the rail a lot. Only issue I can see is the rail is just a little bit short. Doesn't line up with the top of the MUR-1. I am not sure if that is fault of the MUR or the rail. Its not a deal breaker. If I run irons on this rifle I would probably need to check elevation. Also it was a PITA to get lined up. That's the only real issue with these type of rails. It does feel like it will be very sturdy and its pretty darn light.

Okay, I finally got back to assembling my upper with the Sugar Pine rail. Didn't get far. What the heck kind of barrel nut wrench that will accept a torque wrench do I use? All I can think of is an open end wrench on the flats and guesstimate. I have torqued enough nuts to be confident of getting in the 40-70 lbs range. How do you align so the top is level with receiver? Looks like you just get close then trial and error till it looks right.

27mm is 1 1/16" not 1 1/8".

Stay away from cheap crows foot wrenches. They flex and can cause inaccurate torque readings.

I also use 2 6" pieces of all thread and screw into the barrel nut mounting holes before I do my final torque. Makes it much easier to see the alignment of the barrel nut to the upper receiver. If you are using a good fixture to hold the barrel you can get the alignment perfect before you even slide the rail on the first time.

Uffdaphil
18 May 2015, 06:02

Yes, I had an "ah, crap!" moment when I went to install a barrel this past weekend and realized I couldn't use my reaction rod because my barrel is a 6.8. My Squirrel Daddy delrin block set worked fine, though, as it is in an Aero Precision M4E1 upper (WEVO T&E) so no fiddling around with timing the barrel nut.

The Reaction rod works with 6.8 too. Only the bolt face is changed. Lugs are the same and the reaction rod works as designed.

The Reaction rod works with 6.8 too. Only the bolt face is changed. Lugs are the same and the reaction rod works as designed.

I had a feeling someone might say that. When I slid the 6.8 barrel over the reaction rod it seemed very loose / wobbly. I felt it would have worked well enough to lock the lugs to prevent rotation while I tightened the barrel nut but it wouldn't keep the assembly stable enough to work on the upper. I admit, I didn't think much on it and just switched to the vice block set as soon as I perceived the looseness. I guess I was too quick to give up!

SINNER
19 May 2015, 06:34
The rods really do highlight the variations in barrel extensions don't they? I find even barrels from the same manufacturer vary greatly in the amount of play with the rod.

And the barrel without the upper on it is very loose. A lot of the support comes from the rod's fit passing through the upper. Try it with a 5.56 once.

I am a little late but, I would like to thank all of you for supporting us on this project. Your comments helped us sort out small issues and make our product better. We have made the indexing marks on the barrel nut deeper and easier to see. I wrote instructions to go with the rail that give wrench size and other hints.
We are working on more lengths that will be available close to the holidays along with a few other parts. This is new to us a company and getting the feed back is priceless.

Thank you all and God bless,
Chris

I like how they added the qd cup at the front of the hand-guard. Was always curious why Noveske made you pay to add something that should come standard. Regardless of who's brand name is on them they really are incredible rails overall.

The theory is that you can place the QD mount exactly where you want it, and gain the maximum amount of flexibility for placing other accessories. But I am with you on this one. I like having at least one QD socket on each side, built in.

Adding to the SMOS love:

I found SMOS back in July. Their rifle, especially upper, was such an exercise in design restraint, I had to order the upper receiver to see it live. Love the design. I immediately decided it would be part of a tribute build to a family member's service in WW2. I immediately sent the receiver off to be engraved. I also discovered that their upper receiver is the second lightest available, that I know of. It's between 2a and BAD on weight. A very nice benefit since I will pay extra for lightweight--but SMOS doesn't cost extra!

I have a few more things in the works on this tribute build but wanted to post up the upper and upper receiver with engraving. This is also mocked up with the 18" Faxon gunner.

Looking forward to their shorter rail offerings as well as this new receiver set.

Will NOT be complete weapons. Not sure if it will be just receiver sets, or if rails are part. It could be flying monkeys for all I know at this point. SMOS should update in a little while. I don't even know if they have the price structure in place yet.

Hey guys,

I spoke with Stick today and would love to offer all Weapon Evolution Members a discount and first crack at the GFY AR 15 parts. I will have two options up on our website later today. Option 1 will be a stripped upper and rail for $275.00. Option 2 will be a lower, upper and rail for $450.00. You will need to enter a code during check out to get the price. The code for option 1 is WEVO1 and yes it is in all caps. The code for option 2 is WEVO. I am still waiting for photos so look for the weapon evolution logo on our site. As soon as I have pics I will post them.
Thanks again for all the positive feed back and support,
SMOS ARMS

Even though this isn't in my budget right now, I just want to say thanks for making this deal available to us. Looks like a superb product.

I am so sorry about the bullshit code. I know have it fixed and ready for you guys.

Thanks again

I'm having issues checking out with the "WEVO" code for the upper/lower/rail deal, but WEVO1 seems to work just fine. I've tried all caps, no caps, can't think of much else to try...

Any help you can offer would be appreciated!

I've emptied my cart, signed out, tried 3 different browsers, messed with settings in said browsers, any and everything i could think of, no dice. I'm confounded.

What did you put in your cart?

The upper, lower and rail package only. Used "WEVO" and took pricing where it was supposed to be. Are you trying to get both? If so I doubt you can double stack. Would need to contact Chris directly or separate orders...

Edit: neither my desktop nor iPhone accepts the WEVO discount code when the upper and rail kit is put in the cart.

The WEVO1 code is accepted when putting the upper and rail kit in the cart.

I can find no part of the site that shows the lower being part of the kit. If someone has a link, please paste it here.

Well, shit. I'm a complete f@#*ing dumbass. I was just using the "SHOP" drop down menu from the SMOS home page and clicking on "UPPER RECEIVERS", "LOWER RECEIVERS", etc. and found the upper/rail combo under "upper receivers" and figured that was it because there was nothing under any of the the other tabs, and depending on what code one entered at checkout would determine what product and price one got. Nope. Gotta click on the "SHOP" tab and navigate to the "SHOP" page and scroll way down to the bottom to find the upper/lower/rail combo. Here's a link to the receiver set/rail for anyone as stupid as i am: http://www.smosarms.com/products/gfy15-ar15-receiver-set-with-rail-option

Good deal. I honestly thought this was a pre-order and was expecting anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months, so a few days is more than okay with me! Any idea on how long this pricing will be offered? Just wondering if I have time to scrape some money together or if I should go ahead and jump on it.
