Ordnance, post em up! Beleive me, for each shot I find "decent" enough to post on here, there are probably 10 bad ones that get deleted. We're our own worst critics (unless you've got a wife [BD])

I just re-enrolled back into college so by budget is non-existent for the next few years. I'm using a really old Cannon Rebel my parents quit using when they picked up some nicer stuff. I might see if they have any filters laying around. Here's one I meant to put up in Memory of Pearl Harbor yesterday... http://i.imgur.com/E09M3pb.jpg

So - I'm gathering that this is, in essence, another cheap way to do somewhat of macro photography? By decreasing the focusing distance via the magnification?

Just remember one thing Ordnance - at the end of the day, it's not about equipment. It's about your skills as a photographer, and honestly - your own creativity -- your own spin on things. You could get a very nice camera with 36MP sensor, with 52 autofocus points, that can shoot at 5 fps. But none of that will matter if you don't have the knowledge and skills to take nice pictures.

Precisely.

I have a macro kit lens but it was easier to just grab the filter for the quick shot.

So many ways to do macro photography - without a macro lens haha. Never realized such methods existed til now.

Curious though, can you stack more than 3?

I can stack 4 if go in order, x1, x2, x4, x10. the focal plain gets real short though.

Unfortunately no. It was day trip that started late. Plus I'm nursing a really annoying head cold. Maybe the next time I'm up during the winter. It's nice to have a free place to stay (my parent's vacation home) when coming up here.

I've never been on a snow machine. It looks like a lot of fun...kind of like a jet ski, but different.

MonkeyBomb

I used to go regularly before it was so heavily regulated. Its a totally different place in the winter.

gatordev
17 December 2014, 16:05
It definitely seemed like things were much "easier" to explore since there weren't 9,000 people roaming around. Honestly, there wasn't a ton of snow there on that side of the mountain chain. There was definitely some, but not nearly as much as on the west side in Bozeman.

MonkeyBomb
17 December 2014, 16:08
Gardiner is the banna belt. I usually base out of West Yellowstone when I snowmobile in the park. You have to be civilized in the park. The fun is outside WY or over in Cook city. But the animals and views are worth it.

Looks pretty good. Composition looks good. The one thing that I would have (personally) slightly tweaked is the position of that post + wheel -- relative to the frame. There's a general rule out there about composition of pictures - particularly relating to subject/background placement. And that is the "rule of thirds" - so basically pretend there's 9 equal-sized squares in your picture. You'd want to place the subject/background on those lines of intersection.

Take this picture for example:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/RuleOfThirds-SideBySide.gif

Notice the difference in positions? and how much more appeal it adds to the picture?

That's what I'm talking about.

Dstrbdmedic167
18 December 2014, 20:24
I gotcha and thanks! Another thing to add to the list to learn lol. I have heard of them but that helped a lot. I was so worried about getting the best picture with aperture, ISO and shutter speed I didn't think about exact placement of things. Will retry in s couple days.

Just take it one step at a time. One day work on getting down the aperture, ISO another day, shutter speed the next, rule of thirds later, etc etc

Remember that Rule-of-Thirds is one technique, but it's a rule, not a law. Don't get into the mindset that you have to follow it. Depending on the intent of the photo, and what your subject and backgrounds are, it doesn't necessarily have to be followed.

edit: And I should add, that I agree with Thompson on this particular photo. I would have set the wheel on a third line, and also the horizon line. Either add more sky and less foreground, or more foreground and less sky.

Another good technique is to change your position. We're all used to seeing things at our eye level when standing. It's a different view when crouching or getting on top of something. When shooting animals and children, it can help to get down to their eye level (or as close to it as you can get).

New puppy pics! They're officially three weeks old now. They're starting to walk real well and starting to play/wrestle with each other. I've discovered a phenomenon I call "puppy hypnosis" - where I go to just look in at them for a second to check on them, then I look at the clock and 20 minutes has passed.

I'm sorry about breaking the no guns portion, but I honestly didn't want to start a new thread for one pic. Couldn't figure out where else to put it. Had my dad over to put hands on different grips and different stocks for the M5 set(we ordered a magpul ACS-L for those interested) But My cat thought it would be a great idea to pass out with my rifles on the floor. Sorry about the cell phone pic, but this was my daily "Aaawwwweeee" moment.

Still barely recovering from New Years....
I thought we were going to have a quiet night, then the wife invited folks over.
I rarely drink. Played some beer pong (with wine for me) and I was toasted by 10 pm. Managed to make it 'till about 1am. Barely left the couch yesterday.

First shot of the new year.

In related news, I finally made the move into a full frame camera, but Nikon and UPS are being dicks, and I don't have it yet. Nikon explicitly disallows anything but signature on delivery for items over a certain amount, they won't even let me freaking pick it up at the UPS location, and UPS says "sorry, take it up with Nikon" and when I call them they say "we can't do anything about it from our end." So the camera which I was supposed to get today, they'll try to deliver again on freaking Monday, so I'll have to take off from work AND the plans I had to start using it this weekend are kaput. Grrrr. What the hell is the difference between my signature when they drop it off at my house vs my signature when I pick it up from the UPS location??

I don't usually swing up that far North in OR when we head down there but we had to head through Astoria one day so I figured why not. Same trip we ended up seeing that piece of dock which washed up from Japan. Hard part with some of these places is getting photos without random people in them.

And if trying to photograph certain places without random people in your shot isn't difficult enough, there are always those jokers who intentionally try and photobomb you.

He's big for that young.

Yeah, he's going to be a big boy. There were only the three pups in his litter, so they'll end up a bit larger than his parents. They both came from large litters (his dad was from a litter of 10), so they're a little smaller. Sam's dad, Ben, weighed about 5 pounds at a little over 6 weeks old. Sam is at 7.2 pounds at 5 weeks (his sisters are at 6.9 and 6.2 pounds). Ben and Grace (their mama) are both right about 42-43 pounds. I'm going to guess Sam will end up somewhere around 50ish pounds. He's a little hoss for sure though.

Actually, mine was a 10th Anniversary Edition 2003. A real beast. 465 RWHP and 540 RWTorque. Raced it at Road Atlanta and Taladega Gran Prix. The above photo is a cropped picture of a model car I took while testing a new softbox. Used Photoshop to layer it over a road picture and a banner of color matching the Wevo web colors.

Getting a big single turbo.

Turbos are way cool. Looks like he is going with a stick axle, and with a turbo that will be a 1/4 mile beast. I stayed with the IRS and upgraded to Drive Shaft Shop's Level II half-shafts. It was an 11 second car, but I prefer the road courses. I only ran 14lbs of boost, but had a Bassani exhaust system from mid-length headers all the way back. That's why the torque numbers are so high. Air in = HP & air out = torque. If your friend does any open track events, you gotta do a ride along.

That car isn't gonna be worth much of anything unless it's in a straight line. I'm with you. It's one thing to have a fast car, but it's another thing to have a fast car that can corner. Wish I had some pics of the suspension on his car. Pretty much the only thing factory on it is the body and frame. It's close to completion. I'll be sure to show you pics when it's done.

No Sir, been a couple of years since I've been on track. They probably keep two wheel and four wheel records, but I'm not sure. Best I ever did was in the 1:15 1:16 range. The good drivers were doing 1:12 and 1:13. On a short track 2 or 3 seconds is an eternity. A "little girl" came to one of our events in a WRX STI, jacked it up, swapped to race tires and kicked our ass all day - she was running 1:09 1:10 consistently. Beating all the cobras and corvettes that day ! Lady knew how to drive !

Heres one I took earlier waiting to go to work... Kind of a tribute to my Grandfather. The chromatic harmonica was his.. Also never saw him without a bolo tie and the one in the pic was his as well.. He was also a huge civil war buff so I threw in a couple civil war bullets i picked up in Gettysburg years ago.. Definitely want to try this one again down the road with a good camera and some more know-how... Seeing all of the fantastic shots on here are pushing me in that direction.. So thanks for finding me another expensive hobby guys.... lol....

Paragliding over the Tominé reservoir valley, Cundinamara, Colombia. The reservoir is at 2600 meters ASL, and the takeoff site is at 3080 meters ASL. You drive up to ˜2950 meters ASL and then hike up the last 100 or so meters. I don't have my paragliding license, so all I carried up was a ruck with camera equipment, but that hike is a bitch and a half for those of us that live at ˜140 meters ASL. For everyone else it's still not easy carrying the paragliders, harnesses, reserves, etc.

Here's another one from that trip:

New town of Guatavita. The Tominé reservoir was built in the 60s and flooded the original town. Again, shot from 3080 m ASL.

It was cold and drizzly rainy here on Monday so I went out and took advantage of the overcast skies and unique light. I have been reading books and studying different types of light so this is part of my learning experience. Here's what I got. This tree is on my road. I drive right by it going to and from work every day.

Cool shot. Nice colors.

As I posted on FB it was my daughters first birthday. Wife's friend send a care package from Cali and in it was some personalized M&Ms I thought were too cool not to take some shots of.
