I don't know if it's to the same degree. The F22 program cost 66 Billion, albeit in 1994ish numbers. The F35 is now over 1.5 Trillion, and they haven't outfitted a full squadron yet. Marinate in 1.5 Trillion Dollars for a minute... to be fair that's through 2070.
US$1.508 trillion (through 2070 in then-year dollars), US$55.1B for RDT&E, $319.1B for procurement, $4.8B for MILCON, $1123.8B for operations & sustainment (2015 estimate)[11]
Either way, I think we're making a big mistake capping the production of the F22 to 187 planes? Ridiculous how much the military has been cut under the Obama Regime
Never understood the $1.5T to be through 2070. Doesn't seem so outlandish now. However, I am partial to the F-22 as my work requires me to pass by the flight line on a daily basis. It is too bad that they capped the production on the F-22 at 187. I find them to be a great bird, and have always liked twin engine planes.

I think the original number was 700+
Even if we have 187, you have to think maybe half at most are at operational status. I'm no expert, just a passing interest in USAF planes... but how can you operate a first class Air Force, only having 187 5th Generation Fighters?

Our primary aircraft was designed in the 70's with 60's carryover technology. The 22 and 35 programs both have had bumpy roads, but we need a 21st century aircraft to keep up. We can't stretch glass cockpits and piloting much farther. I've been away from that stuff for a while. Is VSTOL still eating up resources?

It's a wet and rainy Sunday here so I got out my camera for the first time since I came back from my trip.

Nice shots! Seen Fifi up close several times, the coolest of which was in... Austin? I think? Either way, I was holding short of the runway, #1 ready to go and had to continue holding short because Fifi was on final shooting a touch and go. I didn't even know they did touch and goes in her up until that point, but it was awesome since it came down RIGHT in front of us, poured the coals to it again, rolled and was up and off again on a slow climb-out.

Well, learning has occurred. That was exactly the plane I was thinking of, but I could have sworn it was a Dornier. After all these years...
Boxy, not pretty, doesn't look areodynamic? British? Check on all accounts.

By the way, if you're mid-South, curious why/where that "Nuts" is behind you in that pic. That seems pretty far from the coast(s) where USMC helos usually hang out.

Yeah, she's not super pretty, but she has her own charm. Everywhere we go people whip out their phones to take pics and want to see the plane. Those tall flat sides always ensure you have a good time whenever landing with a stiff crosswind.
And Irish actually. Found out when I was getting type rated in it that the Shorts Brothers were actually involved in the design and manufacture of the Titanic also. Who knew?
Oh yeah, I took that pic sometime last summer in Little Rock. No idea why the Helo was there. Friggin huge though. The fuselage was wider than ours, and it's rotor diameter I'd swear was larger than our wingspan (77 feet).

I think you added this after I replied, but...
For quite some time. The -60H had it first, I believe, but the -60B had it shortly or nearly at the same time. Most of my time is in a -60B and we had them for my whole career, although not every airframe had them. Each -60R (pictured) now comes with FLIR on every airframe, and it's much improved. It's actually a pretty impressive piece of gear.

There was another similar one nearby that Pyzik got a shot of. Neither had identifying marks or advertisements so i assume either some artist decided they wanted to leave their mark, or they were brought in for a photoshoot.

The first two characters at the top near the handle say "Musashi" in Japanese. He's a famous Japanese Ronin Samurai.
The bottom part of it is a date although it's not specific. It doesn't say which date... it is like 'the lucky day in March' would be a literal type of translation.
No question that the entire inscription is Japanese. I knew that in 2 seconds of looking at those first two characters.
As for the date it could mean a number of things... the date the sword was made or even the date that the Samurai Musashi was born...no way to really know.

Ha, that's cool enough. Thanks man.
The brand is Musashi so that makes sense. It is a China made sword so I didn't expect Japanese.

A little bit more info on the inscription...there is such a thing as a Chinese calendar... and on this inscription it is the year '60'... which in our calendar could mean 1835, 1895, 1955, or 2005... one of those. Doesn't say which one.
It's dated for March of one of those years.

It actually mixes Japanese and Chinese influences on a number of levels. But the main 'character' is about that individual warrior who is 110% Japanese so I knew that part in about 2 seconds.
I know Chinese... but Japanese is related but not the same by a long shot on a whole number of linguistic and cultural levels. For example I am not sure if Japan ever adopted the 'Chinese' calendar. It's possible that they did but I am not a Japanese expert nearly as much as I know about Chinese.
As usual I could write you a book about this stuff.
Hey thanks for the info. Pretty cool someone here could actually read it.
I could read parts of it because Chinese characters are related to Japanese (and Korean)... which I can explain in detail if you would like [:D]
But it was obvious that it was primarily Japanese because of the name given so I consulted some Japanese friends and another person who is also extremely knowledgeable about all things Chinese. I can't take all the credit.
The difficult thing about reading things like this isn't knowing the language... it's knowing the history behind everything. Also if you are reading old (more than 100ish years old) Chinese they had entirely different languages and writing systems. Unless someone tells you from the get go 'this was written in 1795' or whatever it becomes a major pain in the ass to read that stuff. Even native Chinese people cannot read the old language unless it is very recent (late 1800's on)...before that you gotta know your stuff. Once you establish a rough idea of time frame and historical context it becomes a lot easier.

My 1998 Fender Stratocaster Yngwie Malmsteen signature model in Vintage White and a Marshall 1x12 100W combo. Before i even played this guitar, I doctored it up and built a complete new pick guard assembly and harness loaded with a set of Seymour Duncan Hot Rails (neck and bridge only...the middle pick-up is a dummy). I can get some really vicious tones with this set-up. What really blows my mind is that i've had this guitar for nearly 20 years now...

Our country's social and political structures might be blemished, but traveling abroad offers a clear reminder that our way of life is precious. We had no problems travelling throughout Egypt and found the people there universally friendly - but the constant military presence, armed checkpoints and permitted movement between areas were an ever-present reminder that preserving individual freedom is not something that can be taken lightly. My deepest thanks to those that serve to protect us, either domestically or abroad.

It's a 45-50 minute drive for me to get to Mt. Rainier NP, so i'm there quite a bit. Having mid-week days off, i would spend 8-10 hours in the park hiking and not see another human being the entire day. Talk about being able to decompress.

Thank you! That's pretty awesome that your wife has relatives that fought at the Alamo. My mom and dad are HUGE into genealogy as well.
I have been to the Alamo a bunch of times but honestly it's been YEARS since I went. I figured why not eh? $15 bucks for parking though! That sucks. I did find a $5 lot because I'm cheap.
The whole area down there has been built up a lot and is very touristy now. It's pretty fun.

From WikiPedia:
As soldiers approached the sacristy, one of the young sons of defender Anthony Wolf stood to pull a blanket over his shoulders.[118] In the dark, Mexican soldiers mistook him for an adult and killed him.[Note 14][120] Possibly the last Texian to die in battle was Jacob Walker,[121] who was bayoneted in front of the women.[122] Another Texian, Brigido Guerrero, also sought refuge in the sacristy.[118] Guerrero, who had deserted from the Mexican Army in December 1835, was spared after convincing the soldiers he was a Texian prisoner.[120][123]
Brenda's maiden name is Walker. Jacob Walker mentioned above is a relative of the Tennessee Adventurer William Walker "The Gray Eyed Man of Destiny".

That is in Shenzhen China. In the middle photo right across the river is Hong Kong. This side is China, that side is Hong Kong.
We ate lunch on the 95th floor and that was the view from our table.

Our hotel inn keeper is a villager who has basically been taught how to run a hotel. It's a very rural place and they are trying to spur economic development. Anyway I was in the lobby and I asked about the water buffalo...I asked for a buffalo and I got a buffalo. Probably the weirdest concierge request ever on the planet. LOL!
Actually it was one of the neighbors here who happened to be in the lobby. He was impressed with my Chinese and my curiosity so we hijacked two bicycles and rode over pretty much on the spot. I waded out into a rice field and next thing you know I got a whole series of water buffalo photos.

This is Zavikon Island in the Thousand Islands region of New York/Canada. The larger island with the house sits in Canada and the smaller one is in the US. The same person owns them both. The 32 foot bridge is the shortest bridge in the world spanning an international border.

Sinner, that is cool that you were on those islands specifically. A few of the thousand islands are currently underwater due to record water level heights.
It's interesting there is a survey marker on the small island. We were told yesterday that the border was drawn specifically to transect any islands. Google earth shows them both in Canada, and there are numerous conflicting accounts online. But drawing borders through the water can be vague anyway.
Nevertheless, it's a cool area up there

We were up there a good bit growing up. Relatives had a place on Grindstone island. Big area for snow machining so we spent a ton of time when it was frozen over too. The water is real shallow in a lot of the bays and channels so rain always made it fluctuate a lot.
We were in a boat and the owner was painting the handrails of that bridge. We idled up and asked if it was really a international bridge as we had always heard the same. He laughed and said "according to anyone who stands to make a penny off it around here it is." Then he showed us where the concrete pedestal was just about center of the little island. Said it was there when he bought the place and no one had ever used it in a survey but he was informed not to disturb it.

Well I reckon that makes sense. To a tourist the first story is a better one haha. Kinda makes me ponder the accuracy of other things we were told though.
My father in law grew up in Lowville about an hour southeast. He and his siblings own a cabin in the adirondacks on a chunk of property, but I had never been further north until last week. New York does have some beautiful country, just a shame its New York.
One of his nephews got married in Clayton, so we rented a house on the Saint Lawrence as opposed to doing the hotel thing. We were right on the water and saw who knows how many ships go by between Lake Ontario and the North Atlantic.

Some people I talked to up there told us the water level in the river was 18" above the record set back in the 70s. They actually had to build platforms on top of the flooded docks so that people could still use them. This shot is at Boldt Castle when the boat was docking.

I believe it's 4-6 minutes, depending on how much heavy breathing you're doing. Thankfully, I don't know the exact number, but I can typically get 3-4 rides in a dunker with one before I need to swap out for a new one. I will say this...it saved my bacon twice on my last re-qual/currency training last summer. I think it may have saved one of the instructor's bacon once, as well, as I got hung up and he was more freaked out when I surfaced than I was. I think I may have been in a position where he couldn't "right" me to get me out of the water, but since I had air, I problem-solved and eventually got myself untangled from the mess that was hanging me up.

Finally made it to Yellowstone. I could see moving to Montana permanently if property wasn't so expensive.

Not having flown anything but a C172, this may sound like a stupid question, but I wonder why Mil rotary wing and fixed fighter aircraft don't have a detachable operating rebreather handy for the pilot. It would give you more time in deeper water, say up to about 120 feet. Also, in the rare instance that when you dunk that vehicle, if the impact caused a massive fuel leak burning on the top of the water, it would give the pilot, if physically able, almost unlimited time to swim out away from the fire above, basically only limited by depth and any injuries the pilot might have sustained in the crash. In other words, if you're not a "crushing" depth, or in freezing water and face hypothermia within 3 -5 minutes, the pilot would have plenty of time to regroup his/her thoughts, gain their bearing, assess the predicament and "casually" swim away.

It seemed like a super important piece of gear. That along with a sharp knife! Staying calm in that scenario seems to rule the day. Does the dunker put you in upside down?

I may be misunderstanding what you're saying, but that's exactly what this is, a "detachable" (ie, it's on your person) bottle of air. Again, I've been very fortunate to not have to test this in real life, but even in a trainer, there's very little time or mental ability to think about grabbing something extra to take with you, so having it on your person is the best way. Helos, Ospreys, and E-2/C-2 guys all have these bottles. Jet guys, if they're still in their seat when in the water for some reason, can still breath normally from their oxygen mask, even when underwater. If they take their seat pan with them, I believe emergency O2 comes with them (specifically for ejecting at high-altitudes).
Keep in mind, you're not underwater for very long, so you still have plenty of air to do what you're saying. We also train to clear any fire that may be burning on the surface. A few months ago, one of our West Coast birds went in the water. Fortunately everyone made it out. One of the pilots got hung up, but when you watch the video, you can that she's still not down there for more than a minute before she pops up.
The scary part is if you're trapped and the airframe starts to sink. I don't like to think about that.
Staying calm in that scenario seems to rule the day. Does the dunker put you in upside down?
Indeed, and easier said than done. Yes, the dunker can roll, which they do for helo training, but it can also stay up right for fixed-wing training. I really hate rolling upside down, especially in a chlorine pool. It's less painful in the salt-water pool they have at Miramar, but still annoying.

I think we're talking two different things. A bottle of air with a limited supply - I've seen "SpareAir" brand with 5 or 7 minutes of air, vs. a rebreather, used in HALO's, underwater, etc..which will provide unlimited air, as long as it's operating, by scrubbing the bad stuff you exhale and recycling the breathable air back into your lungs. A typical bottle of air, similar to an open circuit dive tank is going to have a short duration of air, when it's out, it's out. A rebreather is closed circuit, scrubs the C02, and can last (the sport diving type, anyway) up to six hours or so on a canister of air, with the advantage of also moisturizing and warming the air. I don't know what the military has in it's bag of tricks nowdays, but generally they aren't small, about 3/5 the size of a standard single tank open circuit type scuba tank and regulator. So, you can't stash it in a bag, but could find somewhere in a chopper to mount it. Maybe it's not really feasible, but if I flew over water on a regular basis, it would up my comfort level up a notch knowing I had up to 6 or more hours of air, while trying to untangle myself underwater, than a 5 or 6 minute supply.

No, I understand what you're saying. I'm just saying that, practically, spending the time to find such a thing isn't worth the effort when you can just put the regulator you already have attached to you in your mouth. Trust me, as long as you're conscious, you're not spending much time underwater. And if you have the time (and sometimes, skill), you can actually land up-right and potentially get out before it rolls, though that's usually unusual.
I know this is a pic thread, so forgive the OT, but here's a video of a dunker in action. You can see how fast everyone comes out, and for this video, you can see no one even has air. The whole video is actually pretty good at showing the progression of the pool day of the 2-day training.
https://youtu.be/HMhEr3INbMA?t=3m1s
For some reason it won't start playing at the saved point, so fast-forward to 3:01.
You'll also notice one guy on the second ride who got lost and still managed to get out. Also fun to watch the riders have their heart-rates start to go up right before they hit the water. My heart-rate goes up when watching the video even today, and I've done the training at least 6 times.
I really hate the dunker.

I hate water operations, so I can see why you hate the dunker. Not everyone can stay calm in those situations.
Back in the day, I was part of one of the first classes at the academy here to do submerged vehicle rescues. It sucked, and I realized that I couldn't do it.

Confidence courses, even those less frequent and "high tech" should be mandatory for all first responders, and all crew members of mil rotary and fixed wing aircraft.
In '95 I was visiting some family in E. Kentucky, and decided to go off on a trip to visit a friend of mine. Fortunately my kids and ex-wife stayed behind. Rains had been torrential. I was driving my Jeep and was rounding a corner when the road caved from under me. There was a river about 10 feet down, and about 10 or 15 ft. deep. The rain and high water had washed the earth out from under the pavement. I went in and under extremely quickly and in utter confusion, remember thinking WTF on a galactic scale. Just by the grace of God did my headlights stay on and I could see a couple of feet out. I was able to roll the window down, undo my belt, and swim out and up. Why I didn't die that night, I have no idea, nor did anyone else. I do credit various "scare and shock" training scenario's that somehow, beyond my understanding, allowed me to keep my cool. My Jeep didn't fare as well and they pulled it out the next morning. Gawkers standing around didn't know I was the driver, and were offering each other's opinion as to whether I had died, how they would have handled it, etc...[:D] Bottom line, scary training is good.

Continuing to stay off-topic, so feel free to split. My apologies, but UW's and FT's posts made me think of this stuff...

A lot of it is certainly mental. I love the water, I just hate being upside down in the water, specifically with no air, and half the dunker rides are done that way. But, every time I go for training, I do gain that sense of "training calm" that FT is talking about. On my last water survival training session (last summer), we had a sticky window on the dunker and I was right next to it. I'm not even sure how the shorter students could even reach it to release it, as it was a stretch for me. When I did grab the handle to pull, nothing happened. I couldn't get it to come free. I'm fully extended and rocking it back and forth. Fortunately, I was on the bottle, and that thing brings on immediate calm, if you let it. So there were are, all waiting for me to get this stupid window open and I see the diver staring at me. So I give him the shoulder shrug and a thumbs down.
He does nothing.
So I reach up again and rock the window back and forth and it still doesn't come out. Then another shoulder shrug. By this time, I'm thinking of releasing my harness and just going at it directly, since I can see (which isn't always the case, since we're usually blind-folded). Finally he comes over and yanks on it a couple of times and it falls free. And off we all go out the window. But that was an important lesson to learn to trust that bottle and relax and problem solve.
Other times aren't so calming. My last three visits to water survival have "gifted" me with malfunctioning flotation gear. Awesome. The last time, both my lobes wouldn't hold air for more than 90 seconds. So there I am, trying to float around in the dark, trying to get in a raft, swim to the rescue hook, get hooked up by the "helicopter," all while constantly trying to tread water AND keep air in my lobes. And I don't naturally float with all that gear on. Man that sucked...but at least I had stuff to put on the course critique!

Here is an album of photos I took this weekend on our Fall Trip to Bryson Cityt, NC. Rode a train where the kids dressed up and then they go to play and trick or treat with Snoopy, Charlie Brown and Lucy. We then did some sightseeing and got on hwy 441 and went to the NC/TN border about 15 miles from Gatlinburg, TN. Today we took the scenic route home and stopped by the Mast General Store. Planned for more photos in Ashville but we got rained out..
