No it's weird, because it's the Nam era dudes who say they'd rather carry an M1. I suspect those that say that either never have served ... or were part of the really unlucky ones that ran into a lot of problems with the M16 early on.
On point with what you said - guarantee those people are only thinking about carrying just an M1, nothing else. No FLIC/LBV, ruck, ammo, etc.
... should probably get one sometime soon (especially since you don't have anyone to tell you no ). CMP has Field and Service Grades for $635 and $735 (OOS at the moment); but they do have Field Grade Specials (new production barrel) as well as M1C's and D's in stock currently.

Correct.
That's why I say mostly original as the stock seems off. The rest of the rifle has correct parts with perfectly matched patina and wear so I'm thinking it may have been restocked at some point to a more "correct" Stock. But a few members of gunboards think it's an original stock that passed through rebuild with the carbine.
I believe the only other cartouche besides the inland mark in the sling well is the crossed cannons inspection cartouche.

Retro Range Time. This thing is never not fun...except when my rear sight gets loose in the dovetail.

Picked up my CMP Service Grade M1 Garand made by International Harvester today. I'm very pleased with it. S/N suggests a 1954 manufacture and the CMP put a new stock on it.
